Why is it so HOT in Georgia still?!!! There has been a record number of days in September that have been 90 degrees or hotter. Needless to say we are not hunting yet lol. I have been dropping Scout's weight but it is slow going without the cooler night temperatures. They just don't have to use any energy to stay warm so it's slow going. I did fly him on the creance this morning for some exercise. He wasn't super interested in paying attention to me. He definitely needs to lose about 20-30 grams more. Well pray for some cooler weather for us and hopefully we will be in the woods killing squirrels soon!

Hello everyone! Hopefully you guys are having a great summer. So Scout is my current falconry bird and the first one I have kept through the summer. During the summer months the hawks will shed (molt) their tail feathers and their primary feathers. Scout currently has a brown tail with black bands on it. Juvenile red tail hawks have a brown tail. He will shed his tail and get his new beautiful red tail feathers this summer. This is such a loooong process though! They don't all come out at once because then in the wild they would not be able to fly and hunt. By this point most falconers are going molt crazy lol. The summer seems never ending and hunting season is far away. I will keep you updated on how Scout is coming along this summer. Take care!
Falconry, one of the world’s oldest hunting sports, is defined as the taking of wild quarry in its natural state and habitat by means of a trained raptor. No one knows for sure when and where falconry began but, based on pictorial records, it is thought that it originated in either Asia or the Middle East about 4,000 years ago. Prior to the invention of firearms in the early 17th century, raptors were used as a method of obtaining food. The term ‘falconry’ covers all trained birds of prey, not just the birds known as falcons.
